Last week at TechCrunch Disrupt in New York City, Twitter announced a new advertising rollout for the platform.  Until now, businesses had to receive an invitation from Twitter in order to buy advertising.  Now, advertising on Twitter is available to all US accounts- that means big business, small business, and individuals.

In order to purchase ad space, Twitter offers a self-service system.  Buyers can tap into Twitter’s wealth of data to target specific demographics for each ad, including location and common interests. Twitter also offers an analytics system so these ad-buyers can track the success of their campaigns.

Opening up advertising to all will open floodgates of cash, and poise the company to better compete with social media powerhouses like LinkedIn and Facebook. According to TechCrunch’s coverage of the story, some expect Twitter’s revenue to hit 950 million dollars by 2014. How users will react to seeing more targeted ads fill their feeds remains to be seen.

Could a move like this poise the micro-blogging platform for an IPO in the near future? What do you think of seeing more targeted ads showing up in your twitter feed? You can share your thoughts on our wall at facebook.com/interworks
