As far as mapping apps go, we’re all familiar with Google Maps, as it’s mapping accuracy is for the most part unparalleled. The runner up might be Apple Maps, even with its post-launch fumble. What these two apps lack, however, is the ability to pull information from users. This is where Waze comes in.
Waze, headquartered in Israel, is a basic mapping app with a twist- it has a social aspect to it to find information. It allows users to share information about their daily commutes. Through the input of other users, you can find out where the cheapest gas is, which routes have the highest traffic, even where police speed traps are.
The app not only offers turn-by-turn directions on both Android and iOS devices, but it allows you to share the progress of your drive with a friend. Rather than calling or texting while driving to let someone know how far away you are, you can share a link to your drive, showing the other person how long they might be waiting.
The socially-sourced traffic app has gained enough momentum to attract the attention of Facebook, which is rumored to be lining up a billion-dollar buy of the company. According to Autoblog, one of the hurtles in the due-diligence of this possible buy is whether the company will remain in Israel or relocate to the US.
Will you give Waze a try? How else have you seen crowd-sourced information change your daily life? You can share your thoughts on our wall at facebook.com/interworks.
